Arrest of Thieves After Chase in Mexico City

The Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC) of Mexico City reported the arrest of three people and the death of another following a pursuit that ended on the second level of the Periférico. The incident occurred after the alleged thieves intercepted an armored truck on the South Periférico.

According to the official report, the events originated on March 26 when operators of the West Command and Control Center (C2) alerted field personnel about a robbery in progress against the crew of an armored vehicle on South Periférico, in the Jardines del Pedregal neighborhood. Upon arriving at the scene, uniformed officers spoke with a 56-year-old worker who stated that while he was preparing to make a cash delivery at a corporate building, several people intercepted him, threatened him with firearms, and stole two suitcases with the cash.

In response, the Mexico City C5 began real-time tracking through surveillance cameras, detecting that the suspects were fleeing on motorcycles traveling against traffic on the second level of the Periférico. Meanwhile, the SSC implemented a security operation with the support of the Banking and Industrial Police to block the suspects' path.

At the intersection of Alencastre Street, in the second section of Chapultepec, the officers intercepted the two units. At that point, the rider of one of the motorcycles attempted to evade the roadblock to continue his escape, causing him to skid and crash. Both were diagnosed with fractures to the femur and tibia and were transferred under police custody to a hospital for specialized medical care. However, the institution later confirmed that the foreign national subsequently died. The other two suspects, also of Colombian origin, were handed over to the Public Prosecutor, who will be responsible for determining their legal status and conducting the official count of the cash found in the recovered suitcase.
